Originating in Korea, Taekwondo is distinguished by its dynamic punching and kicking techniques, with a special emphasis on powerful, high-flying kicks. Today, it stands as the second most popular sport in the world, practiced by millions across continents. Students wear a uniform called a dobok and train in a school known as a dojang, under the guidance of a Sabomnim (master instructor).
At the heart of Taekwondo's global reach is Kukkiwon, the official governing body located in South Korea. Since 1973, Kukkiwon has dedicated itself to spreading the art of Taekwondo worldwide, elevating it to an Olympic sport at the 2000 Sydney Games, solidifying its place on the world stage.
The essence of Taekwondo is reflected in its name:
“Tae” means foot, representing kicking techniques.
“Kwon” means hand, symbolizing strikes and blocks.
“Do” means the way, signifying a path of self-improvement, discipline, and lifelong learning.
